Medical coding basically refers to a specialized billing program that is used not only by hospitals or medical institutions but also by insurance companies to carry out their day to billing procedures.

Medical coding is of many types but all the different coding types are more or less fall in the same category. The software that enables the entire process of medical coding is the same but one needs to be updated with the version that is introduced with the latest technology.

Medical coding is sometimes also referred to as health insurance coding. The term medical coding is often used interchangeably with the term medical billing. Basically, medical coding involves the use of a medical record by a medical specialist that has been coded by a medical coder. This coded medical record is used to bill health insurance companies. At times, medical coding also requires you to do some basic billing if you are working with a private medical practitioner for example. Coding is usually done at the hospital or at a doctor’s clinic. Lately, the medical coding was even done by specialists who used to work from home. However, the situation varies from person to person.

Medical coders essentially attach a specific code to the patient’s signs, symptoms and diagnosis or procedures. This coded information or records are then forwarded to health insurance companies from whom the insurance payment or reimbursements need to be charged. These coded reports are also used by government agencies or by other health professional at time according to their need and usage.

Medical coders basically takes the doctor’s notes and converts the data into different codes using a specialized coding software which is specifically used for medical coding purposes. People or professional who carry out the medical coding process are often called medical coders and they under go proper training and certified courses before they can start up with the profession of medical coding or medical billing.

Medical coding has proved to be a really good profession and as you gain experience in the profession, you will find that there is lot of growth and it gives you good remuneration as well.

Obviously, getting into this profession is not that easy as it requires hard work and practice from all those who want to opt it as a proper profession. There is only course work involved but also rigorous training is required for a proper qualification.
