Bird Flu is a really contiguous disease and is also known by the name of Avian Flu where Avian is another name for the word bird. In comparison of intensity bird flu virus is as serious as that of swine flu. The mode of transmission for this type of virus is through in contact with the person carrying the virus or to be present in area which has outbreak of bird flu.

It represents the specific condition of the bird carrying it. But it is mostly observed that wild birds do not show signs even if they are infected they have kind of build resistance towards it.

In scientific terminology the  virus is known as H5N1. The H stands for hem agglutinin which is name of a protein that is responsible for binding the virus to the cell and causes infection.

As the name explains it all the symptoms of bird flu are like flu in humans and birds both followed with body pains and sore throat. It is also observable that people are more vulnerable to diseases as a result of increasing age specially the diseases related to intestinal track. The elderly people get soft bones, increased weight due to low activity level so they need the diet that is low in calories but is balanced and provide the required amount of nutrients to stay healthy and fit. Therefore the need is to take special care of diet and develop special meals in which all nutrients are kept balanced and are measured in terms of calories in take.

While keeping in mind the needs and requirements of the elderly people a list, food groups or the diet/ meal plans are developed with careful consideration. A few of them are mentioned below for the reader’s reference

Carbohydrates are the basic and most instant source of energy. Make sure that any form of carbohydrates such as whole bread, cereal, mashed or baked potatoes, brown bread, rice or pasta are necessary part of elderly meal.

To obtain the amount of necessary vitamins and minerals, vegetables and fruits should be added to meals that will help in proper digestion of food and increase the immunity of body against diseases. For elderly people six servings of fruit per day is advisable in three major meals and three minor meals. The most important fruits that are very beneficial for elderly people are oranges, apples, bananas, grape fruits, papaya, apricots and water melons. Consumption of garlic is very essential for elderly people because it helps in stabilization of blood pressure.

Spinach, tomatoes, onions and peas are also very healthy for old people when it comes to vegetable consumption.

Still to maintain balanced diet three servings of dairy products are necessary in day. It is advisable to use low fat cheese and yogurt and skimmed milk to obtain the necessary nutrients and digest them effectively.

For protein two servings of food that are high in protein should be made part of diet plan. The food can include, peanuts, eggs in any form such as boiled, scrambled or pouched, pulses, turkey, fish or chicken. The red meat such as beef, lamb, pork or veal should be avoided as it can increase the level of cholesterol.

The spices and herbs should also be used in the meal cooked for elderly as they enhance the taste and smell of food and increase the appetite. They also help in normalization of blood pressure. A few necessary herbs to include are basil, thyme, cinnamon, ginger and oregano.

It is hard to digest for elder people to take large three meals instead they should take six small meals so that their energy level remains constant and they can consume and utilize the energy. The olive oil should be used for cooking and the mode of cooking should be baking, roasting or grilling instead of frying to avoid high fats and cholesterol. Following these simple diet plans helps elderly stay healthy and fit.
