The dictionary describes ‘addiction’ as ‘an abnormally strong craving’. It is the condition that is not normal and the patients suffering from it, seem to surrender to the cravings completely. While most of the people are addicted to using some kind of compulsive habits, others depend on the harmful substances like pills, drugs, morning glory seeds and other forms of substances to fulfill their cravings. There are several ways to cope up with and fight addiction. The most important tool in defeating addiction of any kind is determination. Once a person identifies the drawbacks of these compulsive disorders and realizes that instead of giving them control over things, these habits or lifestyle are messing up the progressive physical, emotional and social growth, they have to exude determination and strength in getting rid of these habits. At this point do not be shy of asking help from friends and family and seeking professional help. One of the best treatments against addiction is an approach that combines peer and professional support techniques. Another effective way to fight the cravings is to find a hobby or a way to spending time which not only involves mental work but, includes healthy exercises of the body as well, so that the body too is able to release its stress and the process of physical detoxification can be commenced. If one does not have that option they should seek other ways to alleviate their mental stress. This may include reading books or opting for gardening etc., or any activity which would keep the mind distracted.

One of the best ways to keep on the path of recovery and ensuring surveillance is to make sure to appoint someone to whom the patient can be accountable to. This will allow maintaining a relationship, in which the patients will be able to seek guidance, help, motivation on the way to their recovery, while being filled with a sense of responsibility of their acts at every step. This job can be appointed to the therapist, a friend, a family member or any other close acquaintance. Another way to focus the energies of the patients is to allow them time to go over their lives, goals and objectives and gauge if they have been able to achieve them. If not then, they should be motivated to re-channelize their thoughts and the approaches to revise their strategies in attaining them. The thrill of achievement is known to play an important part in the recovery process of the addicts. When a patient is sober, they should introduce lifelong changes into their lifestyles, which are emotionally, physiologically and socially healthy for a person. This means opting for the right constituents of food, selecting healthy work out regime in their daily schedules and taking out time to spend quality time with friends and family. This will not only fulfill the various needs of the patients but, will also allow them a chance to enjoy life at its best.

Addiction is a form of bondage or obsession that makes the person its hostage by gaining control over his/her mind and body. A person may suffer from addition to many substances or behaviours such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, nicotine, or sex etc. The only possible way to get over any addiction is through will power and your own realization of addiction towards specific substance or behaviour. Addicts can gain control of a healthy and clean life style by adopting a methodical recovery program or addiction treatment programs.

Addiction treatment is basically a program that assists individuals in getting over their obsession over a certain substance or behaviour. Time required for addiction treatment, however, may vary from individual to individual and on the level of addiction you may be suffering from.

Overcoming the state of denial is the foremost step in any regular and valid addition treatment process. It is actually the state in which the addict actually admits to himself/herself or acknowledges in front of others that he/she suffers from addiction to certain substance. Overcoming the state of denial is really important because without individual’s own acknowledgement the addiction treatment program cannot be successful at any cost.

The next important step after admitting the need to lead a sober life is to seek help from certain treatment and rehabilitation centres. Counselling may also prove to be fruitful for addicts in overcoming their obsession. After consulting the specific rehab centre, the individual requires to complete the entire detoxification program in order to make sure that he/she has fully recovered from his/her addiction, and is on the path to fully withdraw his/her addiction.

The next step requires the individual to engage in the addiction recovery program. The addict may need to carry on his/her treatment even after withdrawal depending upon the condition of his/her addiction and individual disposition.

In order to maintain sobriety, individuals may need to avail assistance of some treatment program such as psychological support from friends and family members, assistance of co-workers, individual or group therapies, and legal, medical, or psychological help. These assistance programs are necessary to help keep the individual on the right path after addiction treatment.

There are chances of relapse in certain cases and individuals. In such cases, some prevention strategies are also adopted. Relapse prevention therapies are designed to help keep the addict from returning to his/her addiction by realizing the signs that may trigger them to go back to their addictive behaviour.

It is necessary for the individual to choose healthy substitutes against their addiction after maintaining sobriety. They must also keep away from substances that may in any way can trigger or tempt them back to their addiction. They must make their living productive in order to avoid any kind of relapse by focusing on positive and productive activities such as yoga, meditation, exercise routines, getting involved in religious activities, seeking counselling session, developing communication skills through the assistance of their respective therapist, seeking group support.

Some of the most commonly adopted addiction treatment programs include

Free-standing Residential Addiction treatment centres

Hospital based rehabilitation units

Long term residential treatment

Outpatient addiction treatment programs

Day treatment programs

Therapeutic communities and

Teens programs
